Rebecca, great thoughts and questions.

I agree that we need some sort of oversight into algorithms and social media empires because they are a public health risk. I am, however, skeptical and cautious about too many restrictions and laws around it because that feels l like a slippery slope -- my communities experiences with restrictions and laws is they land more heavily on those already marginalized. What I do think would help is to break up the monopolies on these social platforms and in the media.

I also don't think that all journalism has to be or even can be "unbiased" as you astutely pointed out. I think its okay and appropriate for journalists to have an opinion, but this obviously doesn't mean spreading directly false information. Its the job of their publications to hold high standards on what is reportable.

Media is an undeniable issue, but I also think that we need in general a better power analysis overall. Its clear that political figures are exploiting the division --- and thats not new. Thats part of an age old strategy to divide people, especially by race to reduce the power of a class. That can't and won't be legislated, but can be our mantle to make sure we and our neighbors understand it.
